Classroom Policies and Expectations
Welcome to Media Arts.
Media Arts Classroom Policy
Media arts at the Grade 10 level focuses on the development of students’ creativity, artistic and technical skills, and theoretical knowledge. Students produce media art works that communicate ideas, feelings, and beliefs to specific audiences. This course also provides students with the opportunity to reflect on the social, cultural, and historical contexts of media art, which enhances their understanding of the world in which they live. Media arts courses at the Grade 11 and 12 level focus on refining students’ use of multiple media and their skills in the use of traditional and emerging technologies and tools. Students create increasingly sophisticated media art works that communicate ideas, feelings, and beliefs to specific audiences. These courses also develop students’ theoretical knowledge and analytical skills, and encourage them to explore in greater depth the cultural, historical, and social contexts of media art.
The technologies and processes used and adapted to create media art may be traditional and may also be digital, including, but not limited to, photography, photocopy art, classical animation, video/television, computer software, digital imaging and graphics, two- and three-dimensional animation, multimedia production, and web page design.
This course is a technology course where student learning is achieved by the completion of practical projects integrating many curricular disciplines. Students will do most of their work in the computer lab or studio area all of which are located in the school. Questions are encouraged and commitment to the task at hand is required to be successful.
Students taking the Media Arts course must review these policies with their parent/guardian and sign to agree to these terms. By submitting this form the student agrees to these terms and understands the consequences associated by not adhering to the policies and procedures:
• Be on Time with Proper Uniform ‐ arrive and be seated prior to the second bell. Proper uniform is required at all times. Additional clothing, that is not part of the uniform, is not welcome. Since the class and studio have equipment that generates heat, the climate system tends to be cooler. Students who feel cold in class should wear clothing that is allowed through the uniform policy (rugby sweater, V-neck sweater, etc).
• Keep Backpacks in Your Locker or at the Front of the Class – due to security issues, it is advised that students leave their backpacks in their locker. If a backpack is brought to class, it must be stored at the front of the class. The teacher is not responsible for any items damage or loss if brought to the class.
• PEDs are Not Allowed ‐ see SJA Student Agenda for further clarification on the board wide policy of PEDs. Students listening to music or creating projects with sound must have proper ear/headphones so they do not disturb others.
• No Food or Drink ‐ this includes water and gum. These items are hazardous to the electronics in the classroom and studio area that could jeopardize health and safety.
• No Gaming, Hotmail, Electronic Social Networking, or Portable Applications ‐ students using the computers/printers for purposes other than Media Arts related work, during class time, will have their computer accounts revoked. Student must review and understand the School’s Computer Policy as seen in the SJA Student Agenda.
• Use only the account assigned to you – students are only permitted to use the account assigned to them. Students must also respect all limitations set by ICT. Any attempt to work around blocked websites, or computer controls will lead to the computer account being revoked.
• Other Class Assignments/Homework ‐ students are also asked not to complete other course’s work in the Media Arts class; this includes studying for tests or homework.
• Respect Your Own and Other's Life Space ‐ Respect each other. On occasion students might be out of class to collect images or shoot video assignments. Failure to stay on task will result in student being restricted to class only for future work. Do not use images or videos of students, staff, or teachers.
• Misuse of Facilities ‐ the equipment/software in Media Arts is for the exclusive use to Media Arts projects/assignments. Students are not permitted to use the equipment for other assignments for other courses or personal use. Students are expected to create projects that are appropriate to the moral tone of a Catholic School Environment. Students will report any damages or broken equipment to the teacher. Students are expected to treat the equipment with respect and not let others outside of our class use the equipment at any time.
Violations of any of the above policies and procedures will be noted and reported to the Main office for further action.
Please contact Ms. Zavodni or Mr. Johnson at the school if you have any questions or concerns with these policies or procedures prior to signing.
